The Importance of Onboarding

We've tangentially talked about the importance of a smooth onboarding process with your app or website in other videos and vlogs. (See our series on creating a project roadmap for Encapsule.) Today we are going to take a closer look at this facet of your project and why it's so important.

We've tangentially talked about the importance of a smooth onboarding process with your app or website in other videos and vlogs. (See our series on creating a project roadmap for Encapsule.) Today we are going to take a closer look at this facet of your project and why it's so important.

Mobile versus Web Onboarding

Mobile app onboarding has an extra step that in and of itself could create a barrier to entry for your potential users: going to the app store and downloading the app. This extra step is not part of the user experience for those who are accessing your services via web. However, your analytics will be able to tell you if the cohort of mobile users warrants an app experience.

Logging In

With this in mind, making the login experience as easy as possible is key. While it adds time to your development cycle, SSO, or Single Sign On, using an integration with Google, Facebook, or authentication partners, will be huge wins for your users. It's easy to see that typing out an email and password takes a lot more time on a mobile device, than clicking a single button that says "Sign In with Google".

Initial User Flow

Once a user has created a login, it is important to consider how many screens they have to work through, and how many actions they have to take, before they arrive at the main event. In the case of our fictional app, Encapsule, the user has to work through a few screens to get information about their current and desired wardrobe. We tried to make this as short and sweet as possible, in order to get them to the overview screen as soon as possible. From there the user can close that app without losing their progress and come back to interact with the app at another time. It's important to envision what that flow might be for your project and work to shorten up the initial "wizard" as soon as possible. Keep in mind the context in which people are often exploring new technology. They might be at home, watching a show, interacting with their kids or family. These types of outside distractions means this process must be simple and short in order to avoid new customers giving up before they've gotten through the first interaction with your app.

These are just a few considerations to keep in mind when planning an app or website. Keep it simple and easy for your customers.
